“Sharing Brings Hope” Charitable Giving Campaign Kicks Off!

Photobucket

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Charitable Giving Campaign, “Sharing Brings Hope” kicked off on February 21st!
Hundreds of schools along with thousands of teachers, administrators, and students will have the opportunity to donate to a dozen organizations that provide much needed programs and services to the community.
The “Sharing Brings Hope” Charitable Giving Campaign raises over $1 million each year with a portion of that going to the Asian Pacific Community Fund and its Affiliate Agencies to provide afterschool programs, computer literacy, cultural programming, early childhood education, gang and violence intervention, health education, literacy, media arts education, teen pregnancy prevention and much more.

Ways to support the LAUSD Charitable Giving Campaign:

  • Make your pledge for a payroll deduction donation to the Asian Pacific Community Fund.
  • Tell a friend, or two, or ten, about the Asian Pacific Community Fund and its Agencies.
  • Get involved – many APCF Agencies need people just like you to volunteer.
Give to the Asian Pacific Community Fund through the LAUSD Sharing Brings Hope Campaign through March 30, 2012 and make a difference in your community!
For more information, visit www.sharingbringshope.org or contact Kristin at (213) 624-6400 ext. 8.

Sally Kikuchi: From Intern to Board Member

Sally Kikuchi (right) with the 2011 Dr. Wen Ho Lee Fellow, Jo Ana Tan (left), as they help out with the 20thAnnual Image Awards!
There must be something in the water at OCA – Greater Los Angeles Chapter (OCA-GLA), since many of its former interns continue to support OCA-GLA by returning as board members. Sally Kikuchi is the newest board member to experience this transition. Recalling her experience with OCA – GLA, Sally says:
“I first heard about OCA when I was in college at UC Berkeley where my friends attended the Leadership Summit and the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) workshops hosted by OCA at different university campuses.  After taking a few years to work abroad, I found myself wanting to return to being involved with the API community and found the posting for OCA-GLA’s internship. With the internship, I felt welcomed into a new family of driven, open-minded individuals who pushed me to address the issues I care about and to appreciate the greater Los Angeles community through a different light.  I believe that OCA-GLA is special in its breadth and depth, from supporting those in need of assistance of obtaining citizenship to connecting organizations in the API community along common issues.  More than the programs and the operations of the organization themselves, however, I truly appreciate the commitment, compassion, and level of awareness shared by those who make up the organization.  I feel privileged to be a part of OCA now as a board member!”
Sally is serving as Secretary of the 2012 OCA-GLA Board of Directors. As a 2011 OCA-GLA Spring Intern, Sally worked on coordinating the State of Ethnic Studies Panel in May.  This panel addressed how with the recent budget cuts to California’s institutions of higher education, Asian/Asian American Studies programs and other ethnic studies departments are in grave danger of being suspended or eliminated.
OCA – Greater Los Angeles Chapter is part of a national organization dedicated to the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States.

Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC):
Developing Their Futures
The Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC) had its beginnings in 1975 as a program serving at-risk youth.  Since then, it expanded its services to include community economic development programs, environmental programs, and other programs that better serve the economically disadvantaged youth and families of Koreatown and the surrounding communities.  KYCC continues to provide a range of services for children and youth of all ages to meet needs such as:
  • Childcare – KYCC provides early childhood education for children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years.  The Center’s progressive philosophy emphasizes creative exploration in a developmentally appropriate environment where children can learn, grow, and develop at their own pace.
  • Counseling – KYCC offers mental health services in English, Korean, and Spanish for low-income children, youth, and their families.  Individual, group, and family therapy is provided free of charge in out-patient, school-based, and in-home settings throughout Los Angeles County.
  • Economic Development – KYCC hosts high-interest yield savings accounts and financial education courses where youth learn how to empower themselves and build wealth.
  • Youth Development – KYCC’s Youth Services Unit provides programs and services that empower minority youth ages 5 to 18.  Programs focus on academic achievement, leadership development, community service projects, prevention/intervention services, and enrichment acitivities.

New Policy Allows Restaurants with Outdoor Dining Areas to Allow Dogs

New Policy Allows Restaurants with Outdoor Dining Areas to Allow Dogs

A new public health policy will give restaurants with outdoor dining areas the authority to allow dogs, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe announced today. The policy change was prompted by interest on the part of both restaurant and dog owners.

“This new policy has been a long time coming for the residents of Los Angeles County. Though it will be up to the restaurant’s discretion whether to allow dogs in its outdoor eating area, this new policy is a benefit to both small businesses and the community,” said Supervisor Knabe. “This policy will give restaurant owners an opportunity to attract new business and to better serve their two-legged and four-legged patrons.”

Restaurants must follow an established set of guidelines if they choose to allow pet dogs to enter the exterior areas of a food facility’s outdoor dinning area. The new policy goes into effect immediately in Los Angeles County restaurants that are inspected by Public Health; areas not subject to this policy are Pasadena, Long Beach and Vernon.

We need people who have a passion for animals to volunteer for our organization. We are also active in bringing about shelter reform.

We are like the Red Cross to the animal rescue world. We give rescue groups supplies like blankets, towels, pet beds, treats, grooming supplies, toys, leashes, harnesses, dog igloos, crates and other pet related items.

Webinar: Engaging Whole Community in Emergency Management

Special EMForum.org Webinar Program
Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 12:00-1:00 PM EST

Engaging the Whole Community in Emergency Management

David J. Kaufman
Director, Office of Policy and Program Analysis, FEMA

Over the past year, FEMA has engaged many of its partners, including tribal, state, territorial, local, and Federal representatives, the academic sector, the private sector, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, the disability community and the public in a national dialogue on a Whole Community approach to emergency management. The recently released document, A Whole Community Approach to Emergency Management: Principles, Themes, and Pathways for Action, synthesizes what FEMA heard through research, conferences, listening sessions, and direct feedback from its partners about how this approach is successfully working around the country.
Woven throughout the document and supported by several examples are three key Whole Community principles that emerged through the national dialogue:

understand and meet the actual needs of the whole community;
engage and empower all parts of the community to define their needs and provide ways to meet them; and
strengthen what already works well in communities on a daily basis to improve resiliency and emergency management outcomes.
We invite you to join Dave Kaufman, Director of FEMA’s Office of Policy and Program Analysis, for a webinar to explore these principles and to engage in an open discussion.

Please see the complete announcement, connection instructions, speaker biography, and related links at: http://www.emforum.org/WCI/moreinfo.htm. As always, please feel free to extend this invitation to your colleagues.

National Association of Letter Carriers Annual Food Drive; WAREHOUSE REQUEST

Every year the National Association of Letter Carriers coordinates the country’s LARGEST one day food drive.
This drive helps local pantry’s restock and provide much needed assistance to their communities.

Labor Community Services with United Way Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, once again will help coordinate this event starting on May 12.

In 2011 88,000lbs of food was collected, this year we are aiming to collect between 150,000lbs to 200,000lbs

To make this happen we are in need of a donated warehouse space.
20,000sq ft. that will provide the following:
Parking for volunteers
Loading dock (s)
Bathroom facilities
After-hours and weekend access
Preferably located in a central accessible area

And none of will be possible without an army of volunteers….so details on how you, your family, company, organization, community can volunteer coming soon.

If you have any possible ideas or locations please contact me directly or Margarita Chavez, Labor Community Services Liaison on mchavez@unitedwayla.org telephone: 213 985 1987

Thank you in advance of any assistance and please share this message to everyone you know
If every household in Los Angeles County placed one can of food by their mailbox on May 12 our food pantry’s would benefit in more ways than we could ever hope.
