This drive helps local pantry’s restock and provide much needed assistance to their communities.

Labor Community Services with United Way Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, once again will help coordinate this event starting on May 12.

In 2011 88,000lbs of food was collected, this year we are aiming to collect between 150,000lbs to 200,000lbs

To make this happen we are in need of a donated warehouse space.
20,000sq ft. that will provide the following:
Parking for volunteers
Loading dock (s)
Bathroom facilities
After-hours and weekend access
Preferably located in a central accessible area

And none of will be possible without an army of volunteers….so details on how you, your family, company, organization, community can volunteer coming soon.

Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.
Mark Ghilarducci, 51, of El Dorado Hills, has been appointed secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency. Ghilarducci has been a partner and managing director at Diamante Partners LLC since 2011. He was vice president of Witt and Associates from 2003 to 2011, deputy director for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services from 2000 to 2003, a federal coordinating officer for the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency from 1997 to 2000 and deputy fire chief for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services from 1988 to 1997. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $175,000. Ghilarducci is a Democrat.
Michael Dayton, 41, of Sacramento, has been appointed undersecretary of the California Emergency Management Agency. Dayton has been acting secretary for the California Emergency Management Agency since 2009. He was chief of staff for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2008. He worked for Congressmen Gary Condit from 1990 to 2003 in multiple positions including chief of staff for the Washington DC office. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $136,368. Dayton is a Democrat.

Garth Brooks Gets His Donation Back
An Oklahoma hospital has been ordered to pay country singer Garth Brooks $1 million after failing to build a women’s health center in honor of his late mother.

In 2005, Brooks contributed $500,000 to his hometown hospital, Integris Canadian Valley Region Hospital in Yukon, Okla., believing the money would fund a women’s health center named after his mother. Brooks’ mother Colleen Brooks died of cancer in 1999.

]]> http://enla.org/http:/enla.org/non-profit-times-2/feed/ 0 January is National Volunteer Blood Donor month http://enla.org/http:/enla.org/january-is-national-volunteer-blood-donor-month/ http://enla.org/http:/enla.org/january-is-national-volunteer-blood-donor-month/#comments Thu, 26 Jan 2012 01:55:52 +0000 astayton http://enla.org/?p=981 January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month.  As we finish out the beginning of 2012, think about hosting a blood drive or donating individually; winter months show the lowest donation levels, and often the greatest need for donated blood.  According to Cedars Sinai’s Facebook page, only 3% of eligible donors in Los Angeles give blood regularly, the lowest rate of any major US city. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. Cedars regularly runs contests for blood donors to win prizes, and hosted a blood drive on MLK Day this year.

Haven’t donated in a while?  You can go to the American Red Cross website to find locations, or you can donate at a local hospital.  Along with Cedars, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, and UCLA Blood and Platelet Center are but a few local hospitals with blood donation programs.  Most people can donate blood every 56 days; in most states, donors must be 17 years old, be healthy and weigh at least 110 pounds.  Can’t donate? You can volunteer to assist at blood drives by staffing reception areas or handing out juice and cookies (the good part!).

Finally, spread the word – send out the links above, so that others can get on board.  The more Los Angeles County residents (and surrounding areas) who donate, the more resilient our communities become to emergency.  Blood donation is an easy way to help your community prepare.

Please join us for the 2012 UCLA Luskin Career Fair!
UCLA Luskin graduate students in the departments of Public Policy, Urban Planning and Social Welfare are currently seeking jobs and summer internships.  If your organization has employment or internship opportunities available (either now or for the spring/summer), we welcome you to host a table at our fair and meet our stellar students and recent alumni!  The fair will take place on Tuesday, March 6 from 11:00am – 2:00pm on the UCLA campus.
At the fair, you will have the opportunity to share information about your organization with potential applicants, collect resumes from graduating masters students and alumni of our program, and network with other employers in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
