Tanker Update

The California State Warning Center was notified of a vehicle accident yesterday on State Route 60 at Paramount Blvd in Montebello (Los Angeles County) that involved a tanker truck with two trailers of gasoline. The gasoline in the rear trailer burned and the gasoline from the front trailer was offloaded. State Route 60 was closed for this incident and remains closed. Cal Trans District 7 engineers continue to evaluate the integrity of the eastbound and westbound overpass structure that was involved in the accident. Per Cal Trans, the eastbound portion of the structure will be demolished. It is undetermined at this time if it will be necessary to demolish the westbound section as well. The estimated time of reopening is unknown. The California Department of Fish and Game responded as the initial report indicated that an unknown amount of hydrocarbons entered a nearby storm drain. Firefighting foam was discovered in the Rio Hondo River channel. There did not appear to be any obvious impacts or immediate threat to the environment. There was no notable sheen visible in the river channel. Clean up contractors are on scene and are engaged in clean-up efforts. The Department of Fish and Game will continue to monitor the situation through complete mitigation of overpass demolition and channel clean-up. There are no emergency management issues at this time.
