Traffic Alert: Pomona (60) Freeway closure

TRAFFIC ALERT: Burning tanker truck shuts down Pomona (60) Freeway:

Thick, black smoke surged skyward after a tanker truck caught fire today on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Montebello, but no one was hurt, authorities said.  Authorities closed the freeway in both directions at Paramount Boulevard about 12:10 p.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.  Firefighters from Montebello and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were sent to the area. The burning tanker was partially beneath the Paramount Boulevard overcrossing to the freeway.  Traffic was also diverted away from the overcrossing while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, an effort that was continuing nearly an hour afterward.
Two people in the cab of the truck managed to get out safely, CHP Officer Vince Ramirez told KCAL9. The preliminary investigation indicated that the truck's brakes may have overheated, Ramirez said. Fire crews sprayed a foamlike substance on the fire and by 1 p.m. appeared to have knocked down most of the flames.  CHP says Paramount Boulevard overpass will have to be inspected before the freeway can reopen.
